Cancer-Associated Forever Chemicals Found In Sweetgreen, Chipotle Bowls: Study

As per a study performed by The New Food Economy, cancer-associated “forever chemicals” were found in compostable fiber bowls utilized at Chipotle and other eateries. Bowls from Chipotle in addition to 7 other fast-casual eateries in New York City were tested by The New Food Economy. Chipotle was the biggest restaurant chain examined. Bowls from all 8 restaurants were deemed to have per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). They are dubbed as “forever chemicals” as they don’t biodegrade naturally, as per the research.

PFAS can infiltrate food that is exposed to these chemicals. Test carried out on the bowls found that they included high fluorine levels signifying PFAS were probably utilized to make them tougher, as the team. The chemicals assist the containers to hold wet, greasy, and hot food. Also, the presence of these chemicals has been determined in other stain-resistant carpeting, nonstick cookware, and fast-food packaging.

In the human body, the PFAS compounds don’t disintegrate and have the potential to amass in the body, as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As these containers decompose, the chemicals infiltrate the soil resulting in noxious compost. As per a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health in 2018, PFAS can cause hormone disruption and obesity, testicular and kidney cancer, among other likely adverse health effects.

On the other end, the House voted in favor to curb cancer-associated “forever chemicals” in a bill that commands the military and the EPA to take strict action against thinning out contamination. The moves passed through the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act), target the PFAS compounds that have surfaced up in 712 sites and 49 states, as per the records from the Environmental Working Group. The bill seeks the military to terminate the utilization of foam with PFAS by 2025 and also would categorize PFAS as a poisonous contaminant under the Clean Water Act.
